Beetle Chair

“The perfection, honesty and harmony found in nature can suggest technical resolutions and aesthetic forms. By mimicking the finer details of nature with form, function, proportion or pattern, we can re-create biophilic human connections and healthy responses to the natural environment.”

The beetle chair was presented for the first time at the annual exhibition Mindcraft12 in Milan, organized by Danish Crafts. GamFratesi found the inspiration for Beetle Chair in the anatomy and aesthetic of the beetle. They reinterprets the beetle’s hard and characteristic shell and structure in a chair that, like an actual beetle, has a hard exterior and a soft interior. The dynamic ability of the insect in space, is developed through a four-legged chair on castors. The chair is stackable and flexible suited for informal meetings, allowing mobility around the table and being flexible and spontaneous in the workspace.

A long collaboration between GamFratesi and GUBI developing the beetle project into a large family including chair, stool, lounge and sofa with many bases and structures. The latest addition is the plastic version, which allows beetle chair not upholstered or just with the front upholstered part.

“The Beetle Chair was one of the most complex projects we had ever undertaken. It is still the most significant piece for us. It has marked our careers and our design language. It has been with us for almost 10 years, but still manages to charm us with its design – a beautiful line that flows harmoniously through space.”

Strikingly simple in form but full of personality, Beetle Chair combines crafted details and advanced manufacturing technologies to produce something truly original: a highly versatile, extremely comfortable, and beautifully expressive chair inspired by the forms of nature.

In 2013, together with GUBI we introduced the Beetle Chair to the world, and a modern design classic was born. The Beetle’s unique success as a design is rooted in its distinctive fusion of artisanal craftsmanship and technologically advanced production techniques. Like the insect that inspired it, the chair combines an almost mechanical exactitude of form with an organic, contoured softness – a duality that mirrors the man-meets-machine story of its making.
